Answering the question, can a DIM supplement help your hormone health?
So first, we'll do a cover what is or not, what is, but more importantly, the importance of hormone balance. Talk about estrogen and progesterone share, how dim, what DIM is and how it works, and also the different benefits for men and women. And also how can you incorporate this into your daily habits.
First, understanding the importance of hormone balance, which hormones are chemical messengers that are critical, and they do countless different processes in our body. Everything from regulating our metabolism to supporting our energy levels, to even influencing our moods and the way that we sleep.
But if our hormones are imbalanced, we can get quite a wide variety of symptoms and they can feel pretty unpleasant. Some of those ranging from mood swings to weight fluctuations to night sweats, to chronic issues overall.
So what is the role of estrogen and progesterone in our body?
And when we think about this, estrogen is kind of like our fire hormone. It gives us a lot of energy. It supports our bone health, it supports our reproductive organs and it regulates our energy and mood. And then we have, on the other hand, the sister hormone, which is progesterone.
And progesterone is kind of our calming hormone. It helps us sleep, but in women, it helps also regulate our menstrual cycles. And it's in delicate balance with that estrogen. It has to be just right. But if things get out of hand and there's an imbalance between the two, you're definitely going to feel it.
So herein lies the supplement DIM.
DIM is actually a natural compound that's derived from cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables are things like cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage. And what DIM actually does is it removes excess estrogens in the body. So bringing that balance of progesterone and estrogen back together.
Now, if you are a woman and you're struggling with some hormonal imbalances, you may be feeling like you have a lot of mood swings, more anxiety, more depression. You could your PMS before your cycle could be getting much worse, more breast tenderness, more bloating.
You could also have increased cramps, and this is where DIM can come in to release and reduce that estrogen. Now, even women who are in menopause can also have the support of dim. It can help to alleviate night sweats, hot flashes, even vaginal dryness. So if you're a woman and you're struggling with some of these symptoms or they're increasing over time, dim may be an option that'll work really well for you.
Now, we often think of just women when we're talking about estrogen, but DIM can also help men. So we are surrounded by estrogens all day long. It's in the air that we breathe. Sometimes it's in our environmental things, it's in plastics. So we are always surrounded by these xenoestrogens, and this is where men can really struggle with getting too much estrogen in their bodies also. But higher fat content leads to excess estrogens.
So men's symptoms, if they're struggling with excess estrogen could be low libido, like more of breast tissue enlargement, Gynecomastia, also with an increased rate of prostate cancer. So there are benefits for men to also take DIM.
So if you're thinking, okay, well I have a few of these symptoms,
Is DIM right for me? What are the complications?
So there are some side effects of dim, which usually happen in the first few weeks of taking it. Some people will report more GI issues, so a little bit of nausea, some diarrhea, even constipation. So it is best to begin slow and just work yourself up to the dose that your practitioner suggested.
Even if you stay at a lower dose that feels better than a higher dose because you have no symptoms, that's okay too. So in addition to also taking a dim supplement that can help release some of the excess estrogens, you can also support that through diet. Of course, it would be obvious that you would want to eat more cruciferous vegetables by incorporating more cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, kale, those types of vegetables. Just help support that. As well as making sure you're getting in plenty of healthy fats.
Healthy fats like avocado, nuts, seeds, things that are going to help support our hormone production. In general, we need healthy fats to have good hormones. So DIM can really be used at any age if you're having hormone imbalances. Again, really looking at how you're feeling, the kind of symptoms you're having, but I oftentimes use it in practice with clients usually around their thirties and higher.
I'm not saying that somebody in their twenties can't use it at all. There's different varying forms of DIM that can be supportive for younger individuals. But a lot of times in our mid thirties and beyond, we're getting into perimenopause. And as women, we're really struggling with more symptoms. And this is where taking the dim can really alleviate maybe those night sweats, maybe more bloating, maybe the PMS stuff is changing, maybe really heavy periods are happening. So this is where DIM can really be supportive.
Now, when it comes to taking a dim supplement, you may be thinking, okay, well that sounds like something I want to try, but what should I try? And I'm going to link a couple of different products down below where you can easily order them.
