How Can Mint Help with Gut Pain Relief?

If you are someone who struggles with gut pain, you've probably been looking all over for something that can help. And while there's many things that are on the market, one that is tried and true is mint. And mint has been around for centuries, used to help soothe our gut and ease are bloating as well as alleviate symptoms specifically related to irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.

So one of the really interesting and cool things about Mint is that they actually contain, or the menthol in it actually contains anti-spasmodic properties. So when you think about irritable bowel syndrome, obviously irritability, some people really struggle with a lot of abdominal cramping or just abdominal pain, that doesn't make any sense. And by using something such as mint to help calm those spasms may be happening, can really feel soothing.

Different Forms of Mint Supplements

Now, mint supplements come in many different forms. Everything from a tea to taking a capsule to even ingesting a peppermint oil, obviously that's food grade, but can cause or can really soothe some of the issues that come along with IBS.

What Can Mint Help With?

So what are all the things that Mint can actually help with if we're struggling with gut symptoms? And as I've said a few times, it is a big supporter of IBS. So as we may have bloating or gas or even that abdominal cramping, taking in some mint either via capsule or tea can really be soothing. It also is very helpful for people who struggle with indigestion. So if you feel like your food is just kind of sitting in your stomach too long and it's just kind of, not necessarily heartburn, but just kind of like full and uncomfortable, peppermint can be very soothing because it will help to digest the food in a very calming way.

So not only does mint or peppermint supplements support IBS, but you also can find some relief if you're struggling with indigestion, kind of the feeling of your stomach being full too long or just like the food's not moving. Mint can actually help to produce or promote bile flow. And bile is a substance that we have in our gallbladder, and so that by taking a little mint, it can express that bile better, helping to digest fats better, which is pretty hard for the gut to digest. And mint can just really help soothe that.

Mint has also been found to support inflammation of the gut. So by sipping on some tea, or again taking like a capsule, it can really soothe our stomach and our intestinal tract easing nausea and even gas.

And another great thing about mint or peppermint supplements is that it can help to support our gut motility. So it really just relaxes the intestinal tract and kind of helping that peristalsis, which is the movement of our intestinal tract, calm down so your gut isn't so irritable.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Of course, with all the great things that Mint can provide, there are side effects. And specifically with people who struggle with acid reflux, if you are having a lot of heartburn or acid reflux, I would not take a peppermint oil. You may just feel even worse. It can be really uncomfortable.

So indigestion is much different than acid reflux. And if you're struggling with one or the other and aren't sure, you can always comment down below and leave us a message and we'll definitely get back to you. But if you're struggling with acid reflux, don't take peppermint. So if you're struggling with gut symptoms, you've been trying to find something that may help you, you know what it can help with.

How to Take Mint Supplements

Now, do you want to try it? And maybe you do. Peppermint not only will do all the things we talked about, but obviously it tastes really good too, and leaves just a nice refreshing taste in our mouth. So how do you do it or what is the best option?

So peppermint oil can be found in capsules, and if you choose to go that route, that's much more handy and you can take 'em anytime in terms of if you're home or not at home. So you would want to start with about 180 to a 200 milligram, take it before your meals and just see how it feels. If it feels good to you, you can continue that process because this will help to again, digest some of your food, expressing more bile, reducing gas and nausea, as well as calming down our intestinal tract.

Now if you're thinking, I don't really want to do capsules, you can always do peppermint tea and you can definitely get peppermint teas in already packaged tea sachets, and you would just want to steep that in six to eight ounces of water, steep it for about 10 minutes, and then just sip on it.

I think a lot of the clients that I have will oftentimes drink peppermint tea. It seems really soothing for them. And of course now in the season that we're in right now, it's a little chilly out. So it's also really warming and comforting.

Now, you can also do peppermint tinctures, which is another great option, and sometimes people really enjoy doing that. So you would take one to two milliliters, which is approximately 20 to 40 drops of the peppermint oil, and you can dilute it in some water and then just drink it. So as you've heard, peppermint has been around for centuries, has very much been supportive in gut health and relieving gut symptoms.

Does Mint Work for Everyone?

I know that just like any other supplement, they don't all work for the same people for the same things. For example, I tried peppermint oil years ago and it just never sat right with me. Teas, oils, tinctures, whatnot. And so really it should have is what I thought when I took it. So just kind of sharing that with you so that if it's not really doing what you think it should be doing or why you're taking it, it's okay. Not all supplements work for each individual, and I hope that this shared a little bit more about how you can reduce some of your gut symptoms.

Final Thoughts

Now that doesn't mean that you've cured your gut or there's no underlying issues, and that taking peppermint oil is going to make everything all better. It's really just reducing symptoms on a daily basis. So if you are struggling with gut health, definitely talk to a practitioner to get to the root cause of what that is.

Now I'm going to link below different kinds of peppermint options that if you're interested are safe and third party tested. So you can definitely take a look at those.
